AI PCs: what an NPU does and when it matters

An "AI PC" is a computer with a neural processing unit (NPU) built into the processor. The NPU runs small AI models on the device, cheaply and quietly. Most of the AI your staff use today runs in the cloud and does not need one, so the question is whether the next fleet refresh should include it anyway.

The short answer

If you are buying laptops this year and expect to keep them four years or more, buy ones with a capable NPU. The premium over a comparable machine has narrowed, and more Windows and application features will lean on it over the life of the device. If you are buying a few desktops for reception, point of sale or a warehouse terminal, an NPU adds little and the money is better spent on memory and a good SSD.

CPU, GPU and NPU

A modern laptop chip has three kinds of processor on it. Each is good at different work.

The NPU exists for efficiency. Blurring a video background, cleaning up microphone noise, live captions and on-device search can all run on a GPU, but on an NPU they use a fraction of the power. On a laptop that shows up as battery life and a fan that stays quiet during a two-hour video call.

TOPS, and why the number is only a starting point

NPU speed is quoted in TOPS: trillions of operations per second, usually measured at 8-bit integer precision. Vendors quote it because it is one easy number. It tells you roughly what class the chip is in. It does not tell you how fast a given application will run, because that depends on memory bandwidth, software support and whether the application uses the NPU at all. Many do not yet.

What Copilot+ PC means

Copilot+ PC is Microsoft's label for Windows laptops that meet a hardware floor for its on-device AI features. The published minimum is an NPU capable of 40 or more TOPS, at least 16 GB of RAM and at least 256 GB of storage. The first machines used Qualcomm Snapdragon X chips; AMD Ryzen AI 300 series and Intel Core Ultra 200V series processors followed.

The label unlocks a set of Windows features that only run on qualifying hardware, such as Windows Studio Effects for cameras and microphones, live caption translation, and Recall, a searchable timeline of what was on screen. Microsoft changes the feature list over time, so check the current list against what your staff would use.

When an AI PC matters

Heavy video-call users. Sales, support and leadership who spend hours a day on camera get the most from on-device background effects and noise suppression at low power.
Mobile staff. Battery life is where the NPU shows up most clearly.
Privacy-sensitive transcription and search. Features that run on the device keep the data on the device. For some firms that is the whole point.
Long refresh cycles. A laptop bought now will be in service into the 2030s. Software will make more use of the NPU during that time, not less.

When it does not

Cloud AI tools. ChatGPT, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Gemini and similar services do their work in the vendor's data center. A five-year-old laptop with a browser runs them just as well.
Running large models locally. An NPU is too small for serious local language models. That work needs a GPU with plenty of memory. See running AI on your own hardware and the AI hardware directory.
Fixed-function desktops. Kiosks, reception PCs and shop-floor terminals.

Specs that matter more than the NPU

Memory. 16 GB is the sensible floor for a business laptop now, AI or not. Many thin laptops solder the memory to the board, so buy what you will need for the life of the machine.
Arm or x86. Snapdragon machines run Arm Windows. Most current software runs natively or through emulation, but check older line-of-business apps, VPN clients, printer drivers and security agents before buying a fleet.
Management. Business lines (with Intel vPro, AMD PRO or the Snapdragon equivalents) add remote management and longer support than consumer models.

Before you buy

List the AI features staff would use, and check which need an NPU and which run in the cloud.
Compare NPU TOPS, not combined platform TOPS.
Buy at least 16 GB of memory; check whether it can be upgraded later.
If considering Arm, test every business-critical app, driver and security agent on one unit first.
Set a policy on Recall and other on-device capture before the machines ship.
Check warranty length and management features against your refresh cycle.
