The register is built from the US Environmental Protection Agency's ENERGY STAR certification data, published as open data. This build was made on 29 Sep 2026.

ENERGY STAR certifies products that meet its energy-efficiency specification. A machine missing from the register may simply not have been certified; it is not a judgment on the machine.
What we do to the data
- Only models listed for the United States market are kept.
- A model certified more than once (after a firmware change or a retest) appears once, with the figures from its most recent certification. The page says how many times it was certified.
- Where a maker put a description in the model name field ("Label Printer") and the model in the number field, the model number is used as the name. Very long marketing names are replaced by the model number and kept as a description.
- Obvious variant spellings of one brand are merged ("HP Inc." and "HP"). Separate brand names owned by one company are kept apart, because that is the name on the machine.
- Machines are grouped into categories a buyer would recognize, from ENERGY STAR's product type, marking technology and size format: copiers and MFPs, office printers, label and receipt printers, document scanners, wide-format printers, mailing machines, digital duplicators, dot matrix printers, UPS battery backups, business computers, monitors and displays, servers, network equipment, business phones, EV chargers, ice machines, water coolers, coffee brewers, vending machines.
Derived figures
- Electricity a year is the certified typical electricity consumption (TEC) in kWh multiplied by 13¢ per kWh, close to the recent US average commercial rate reported by the US Energy Information Administration. Your rate may differ.
- Energy against peers compares a machine's TEC with the median of every certified machine in the same category and color class within 20% of its speed, all makers. It is shown only when there are at least five such machines.
- Comparable machines are other makers' models in the same category and color class within 20% of the speed, or for a UPS within 25% of the VA rating, nearest first.
Corrections
Figures are as each maker certified them. If one looks wrong, it may be wrong at source, but tell us at our contact page and we will check it.
